COLLECTION POINT: ST BARTHOLOMEW’S CHURCH, WIGGINTON
If you were in a crisis, where would you turn?
Many of us have friends and family to turn to when the going gets tough. But what if you had nowhere to turn? What if the kids were hungry, the cupboards bare and you weren’t sure where the next meal was coming from?
That’s where Foodbanks help, giving support when it’s most needed, averting greater disaster or poverty. There are now 170 foodbanks in the UK, thanks to the Trussell Trust. But there are 13 million below the poverty line. Dacorum Foodbank and DENS,(Dacorum Emergency night shelter) has seen dramatic increases in people turning to them this year, through redundancy, delay in benefits, housing issues, domestic violence or debt.
How does it work?
Non-perishable food is donated by the public at collection points. It is then sorted by volunteers. Frontline care professionals such as doctors and social workers identify people in crisis and issue a food voucher. Clients receive three days of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food in exchange for their food voucher. Foodbanks also make time to chat and to signpost clients to other helpful services.
How can I help?
ST. Bartholomew’s Church is now a collecting point for the Foodbank! Simply bring along non-perishable food on Sunday mornings or evenings, or any day as the church is open from 8.30am. A list of requested itemswill appear here
Buying a treat? Please remember the basic needs in your community too! Just by giving food to the Foodbank you can be a vital part of the community that’s helping to feed Dacorum’s people in crisis.
